1、用法不同except后面的賓語是被排除在外的。

例句：All the students took part in the sports meeting except Tim.除Tim以外，其他同學都參加了運動會。except for后面跟的賓語往往和主語不是同一類事物。例句：All the buildings are great except for their location.除了位置以外，所有的建筑都相當不錯。

2、地位不同except 能被 except for替換，而except for 不能被 except 替換。例句：I had nothing on except (for) my socks.我除了短襪什么都沒穿。

3、特征不同except for 具備兩個 except沒有的特征：except for 后的名詞引述相反的意思，從而修正主句；且句中無相稱同類詞。例句：Except for the ticking of the clock, his house was silent.除了時鐘的滴答聲，他的家中靜悄悄的。
