either…or…主要用于表示選擇，其意為“要么……要么……”、“或者……或者……”，用于連接兩個(gè)性質(zhì)相同的詞或短語(yǔ)。either…or…連接兩個(gè)成分作主語(yǔ)時(shí)，謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞通常與其靠近的主語(yǔ)保持一致也就是我們常說(shuō)的就近原則。

(1)Either you or I am to go.你或我必須有人去。

但在非正式文體中，有時(shí)也會(huì)一律用復(fù)數(shù)謂語(yǔ)。例如：
(3)If either David or Janet come,they will want a drink.大衛(wèi)或珍妮特來(lái)的話(huà)，是會(huì)要喝酒的。
2.either…or…除可連接兩個(gè)詞或短語(yǔ)外，有時(shí)也可連接兩個(gè)句子。
(1)Either you must improve your work or I shall dismiss you.要么你改進(jìn)工作，要么我就辭退你。
(2)Either you’ll leave this house or I’ll call the police.你要是不離開(kāi)這座房子，我就叫**來(lái)。
3.either…or…的否定式可以是not either…or…，也可以是neither…nor...。
(1)He didn’t either write or phone.=He neither wrote nor phoned.他既沒(méi)寫(xiě)信又沒(méi)打電話(huà)。
注意，正如不能說(shuō)either…not 一樣(但可說(shuō)not…either)，英語(yǔ)習(xí)慣上也不說(shuō)either…or…not，如不能說(shuō)：Either he or his wife hasn’t come.可改為：Neither he nor his wife has come.
